Omega Seamaster XVI ref.2850 Olympic games 1956
This Omega Seamaster XVI, reference 2850SC, was released in 1956 to celebrate Omega's 25th anniversary as the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games, which that year were held in Melbourne, Australia. Omega created three dial variations for this special edition:
1. A Chinese lacquered dial featuring the Olympic Cross of Merit.
2. A Chinese lacquered dial with a "Seamaster" signature and a faceted "XVI" applied in gold.
3. A metal dial with the same "Seamaster" signature and applied "XVI."
The first version was exclusively given to individuals closely involved with organizing the 1956 Olympics, with only about 100 pieces made due to Omega's lack of rights to use the Olympic Cross of Merit on a commercial product. Versions 2 and 3 were available to the public, likely sold at the Melbourne Games, making them a unique souvenir for the wealthy visitors who attended.
The specific Omega Seamaster XVI being described features the second dial variation, with its elegant Chinese lacquer finish, applied gold "XVI," and beautifully faceted gold hour markers. This lacquered dial gives the watch a stunning gloss and depth that isn’t found on the more common metal dials, which tend to patina over time.
This watch comes in an 18kt yellow gold case, with a black handmade leather strap and an original Omega buckle. It's in excellent visual and technical condition, measuring 34mm in diameter (excluding the crown), and would make a striking addition to any collection.
